VisualCat's Origins
- VisualCat is the University of Delaware's portal to UD's digital image collections
that require controlled access for digital rights management.
The VisualCat service has its roots in a project funded by the
Unidel Foundation to convert portions of the Art History Department Slide Library
(now Visual Resources Collection) from an extensive resource of
photographic slides to a network-accessible image database.
We gratefully acknowledge the Unidel Foundation's partial funding of
the initial software license needed for the image server.
Collection development and VisualCat services are provided by
Research & Data Management Services (RDMS), Information
Technologies - User Services, University of Delaware, in partnership
with departmental curators and catalogers.
VisualCat's Hardware and Software
- The underlying collection management software for VisualCat is the Insight Suite®,
produced by Luna Imaging, Inc..
The Insight Suite includes tools for collection development, browsing,
searching, and presentation.
The Oracle® database system, version 10g,
provides database services for the images and associated metadata.
VisualCat's primary hardware is a Sun Microsystems
Sun Fire V240, a dual-processor (UltraSPARC-IIIi,1.5Ghz) system with 8 Gb of
shared memory.
